Moscow

A city turned into an alphabet.

Year
2020
Format
A3 newspaper

Working from satellite views of Moscow picked out on Google Maps, this project explores building a typeface out of a single material: the roofs of the buildings.

The roof shapes, mostly flat, are photographed, selected, then reworked and vectorised to build each character. A piece of research grounded in observing, selecting and turning architectural forms into typographic signs.

The result is a complete, working alphabet, where every letter keeps the graphic imprint of a real fragment of Moscow. The city becomes matter to set with, and its architecture turns into a visual language.
